  • The Old Course St Andrews (Scheduled for 2015)

  • Royal Birkdale (last held 2008)
  • Royal Lytham and St Annes (last held 2012)
  • Royal Liverpool (scheduled for 2014)

In 2013, Muirfield, located in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland, held the Open Championships for the 16th time. However, for the 2014 Open Championships, the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, also known as Hoylake, will have the pleasure of hosting what promises to be a fantastic tournament as Phil Mickelson will attempt to retain his title.

Royal Liverpool, Hoylake, is known for its development of amateur golf as it hosted the Amateur Championship. Nevertheless, the Open Championship has been won at Hoylake by 3 different amateur players with the most notable players being members of Hoylake, John Ball and Harold Hilton. The other amateur who has won the Open at Hoylake was Bobby Jones, who in the same year managed to win the other 3 majors, winning him the Grand Slam.

The Open was first played in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland, where it was restricted to just 8 professional golfers who played for The Challenge Belt and no prize money. The Open now has a field of around seventy professional golfers, who qualify based on their performances in the previous season and world ranking. Some Amateur golfers and regional Professionals try and qualify for The Open by playing in local, national and international tournaments held all over the world.

In 2013, Ernie Els was defending his title for a second time at Muirfield, yet he could not stop the American, Phil Mickelson, from playing an extraordinary game of golf, birdieing the last four of six holes to comeback from 5 strokes down to win. Phil Mickelson will travel to the Royal Liverpool golf club in 2014 looking for his second Open victory and to retain the title.
