This year’s venue, Muirfield, is a links course located in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. The course has hosted the Open Championship fifteen times, the most recent one being in 2002 when Ernie Els (This year’s defending champion) won the Claret Jug.
Golfing legend Jack Nicklaus won three Open Championships in total, the first of which happened at Muirfield in 1966, he describes the course as “the best golf course in Britain”. He rates the course so highly that he has named one of his own American courses after it, Muirfield Village in Columbus, Ohio.
The Open was first played in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland, where it was restricted to just 8 professional golfers who played for The Challenge Belt and no prize money. The Open now has a field of around seventy professional golfers, who qualify based on their performances in the previous season and world ranking. Some Amateur golfers and regional Professionals try and qualify for The Open by playing in local, national and international tournaments held all over the world
In 2012 Ernie Els picked up his second Open Championship trophy by coming from behind in the final round to win by a single shot over Adam Scott at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club. No doubt Ernie will be looking forward to defending his title somewhere he has won before.
